AI Search and GEO

SEO vs GEO: Priorities, Work and Measurement

Published 4 min read

The short answer

SEO helps people find and evaluate your website through search. GEO is an industry term for work aimed at visibility in AI-generated answers. When comparing services, ask what extra work is proposed, what information it improves and how results will be reviewed.

Separate the search experience from the business result

A conventional search journey can include an impression, result and website visit. An AI-assisted journey can include a generated explanation, brand mention, source citation and follow-up question. A person can use both during one purchase; different systems and features do not produce identical answers.

A mention is not necessarily a recommendation. A citation is not necessarily a visit. A visit is not necessarily a qualified inquiry. Those distinctions matter more than the service acronym when you evaluate a report.

Google’s AI-feature guidance keeps established SEO relevant and does not require special AI markup. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee inclusion. Claims about another platform need that platform’s own evidence.

Check whether the proposal charges for the same work twice

One well-supported service explanation can help readers arriving through different routes. Calling its rewrite “SEO content” in one budget and “GEO content” in another does not automatically make it two distinct tasks.

Illustrative scope reconciliation—not a Stormy price list
Proposed work Shared foundation or additional task? What to clarify
Correct a service’s eligibility and exclusions. One information improvement serving several journeys. One approved source and page revision; do not count the same revision twice without explaining separate work.
Observe a defined set of AI-assisted comparisons. Potential additional observation work. Actual platforms, questions, method, failed attempts and saved evidence.
Make a platform-specific technical change. Only additional if a real requirement and implementation are identified. Official basis or stated hypothesis, compatibility and responsible developer.
Create a separate “AI version” of every page. Not justified by the label. What distinct reader need would the duplicate answer satisfy?

Ask for a single work breakdown with quantities and acceptance checks. Separate tools, labor, content production and specialist implementation. This is about understanding the purchase, not assuming a particular provider has duplicated its invoice.

Choose from your starting problem

Starting point Useful first priority What to postpone
The offer is difficult to understand. Approve accurate commercial information and improve its explanation. A large prompt dashboard that cannot fix unclear company facts.
Useful content exists, but little is measured. Establish the relevant search and business baseline. Strong claims about which channel creates customers.
Actual buyers use AI to compare options. Identify those decisions, improve missing information and consider a documented observation sample. Irrelevant questions chosen only to generate a favorable score.
The same small team must approve all content. Choose a coherent priority-page group and manageable review process. Two disconnected programs competing for the same scarce source material.

These choices involve real tradeoffs. If approval capacity is the constraint, buying more production in two programs can create a queue rather than progress. If the website already explains the offer well, a narrowly defined observation may answer a useful additional question.

Show what the percentage measures

Suppose a fictional sample records 20 successful answers and five mention the selected brand. Its observed mention rate is 25% for that sample—not a share of all people or all AI questions. Report failed attempts and changes in the question set too.

Keep these layers separate: mentions and citations; identifiable visits from a source; completed page work; and qualified inquiries where records support them. Google’s AI-feature documentation includes its AI-feature traffic within Search Console’s overall Web reporting. Do not rename that entire total “AI traffic.”

The reporting guide shows the fields and calculations in more detail. A correlation between a changed answer and a page edit is not proof of the edit’s effect.

Ask what you can inspect

A useful proposal names the pages and facts being improved, observation platforms or features, question set, conditions, record format, review responsibilities and extra costs. It should also explain the limits of the evidence.

Ask what counts as completion when the external answer does not change. Approved, documented work is within the project’s control; a future recommendation from another system is not. Reject an undefined promise that a special file, more headings or a guaranteed citation will substitute for that explanation.
