Web Design and SEO: Coordinate the Handoffs
The short answer
Plan web design and SEO together, but be clear about who does what. Launching a website does not finish ongoing content work. SEO recommendations may also depend on a developer or product expert. Agree on those responsibilities before they cause delays.

Define two different kinds of completion
Launch sign-off covers work you can check now: the approved pages are present, real content works in the layouts, agreed editing tasks are possible and the inquiry path behaves as specified. Continuing SEO concerns choosing and reviewing further work using business priorities and available search evidence.
This distinction helps avoid two common misunderstandings: expecting a build fee to include every future article, or calling a site finished merely because the design looks complete. Stormy Increment’s annual plan and build-only services have different scopes. Review the listed service options and confirm the responsibilities; a combined requirement does not automatically become a standard package.
Use a completed responsibility checklist
The fictional project below is a company replacing an unclear service website. Its role names are illustrative; put real people against your own tasks. A person can hold several roles, but each decision still needs an owner.
| Work | Input and dependency | Responsible role | Acceptance and handoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page map | Approved offers, customer questions and retained resources. | Website/content lead; business owner approves. | Distinct page jobs accepted before detailed layouts. |
| Page copy | Page map plus product facts and permission to use evidence. | Writer; product expert checks claims. | Approved copy with unresolved facts separated. |
| Representative templates | Real copy for a detailed service and comparison. | Designer and developer. | Both examples readable on desktop and mobile. |
| Transition | Existing URL/resource list and approved destination decisions. | Implementation lead; business approves removals. | Checked mapping and dependencies before launch approval. |
| Publication | Accepted pages, inquiry tests and launch permissions. | Authorized publisher. | Live checks recorded and issues assigned. |
| Continuing work | Baseline, future priorities and named reviewers. | Agreed SEO/content and company owners. | Separate continuing responsibilities and review method. |
Suppose the product expert has not approved an eligibility condition. The copy is not ready for final design, even if every other paragraph is polished. Record that dependency instead of asking the designer to hide the condition or the writer to invent it.
Test the two cases most likely to break the design
Long specifications: a compact product card looks balanced with three short labels, but the real product has six conditions and two units per value. Acceptance means the values remain paired with their labels, the reader can see the relevant conditions and the mobile layout preserves the relationship. Reducing the text until it fits is not an acceptable solution if meaning is lost.
Evidence with limitations: a result card has space for a large number but not its metric, period or caveat. Acceptance means the reader can identify all three near the claim. If the necessary explanation will not fit, change the component. Do not remove the limitation to protect the visual effect.
These examples complement the website acceptance checklist; they are not an argument for making every page longer or identical.
Treat a changed requirement as a decision
A new product, language, integration or URL structure can change more than one person’s work. Record the impact before implementation. The example below is a fictional change request, not Stormy’s contractual process or revision allowance.
| Field | Illustrative entry |
|---|---|
| Request | Add a product-comparison page after templates have been approved. |
| Reason | Sales needs buyers to distinguish two approved models before requesting a quotation. |
| Dependencies | Product comparison facts, a table layout, a new page route and mobile checks. |
| Decision owners | Product lead approves facts; project owner approves scope and any revised fee or schedule. |
| Completion check | The two models remain correctly associated with conditions on desktop and mobile. |
The change may be worthwhile. That does not establish that it is included free, can be completed without delay or should proceed before existing commitments. Ask for the actual commercial treatment.
Give the website a clear owner after launch
Separate a defect against the accepted specification from a new feature request, routine maintenance and continuing SEO. Each needs an agreed route. A problem with a delivered form, an additional language and a new article are not three versions of the same task.
At handover, name who holds domain/hosting access, maintains licenses, approves new facts and publishes updates. Confirm what records and support are actually provided; do not infer perpetual maintenance or unlimited revisions.
Then define the next review. Google explains that search changes take varying periods and may not have a noticeable effect. A successful launch is therefore not evidence that traffic or sales must rise on a deadline. Use approved work and consistent observations to decide what comes next.

A build, a redesign and ongoing SEO have different completion criteria. Use these guides to select the extent of change, compare the people doing it and test the handover.
Choose the team and scope
Verify the explanation, implementation boundaries and access requirements.
Plan before launch
Build a small, useful website and define the first review.
Test the finished website
Try realistic editing and customer tasks before accepting a build.
Choose the extent of change
Use the constraint to choose a template, a custom build or a narrower improvement.
