How to Choose a WordPress SEO Agency

Choose a WordPress SEO agency that can explain the problem, carry out the agreed work and show you what changed.

The short answer

Choose a WordPress SEO agency that can explain the problem, carry out the agreed work and show you what changed. A plugin list or traffic chart is not enough. Check the people, process and evidence behind the proposal.

Give every candidate the same problem

Prepare a short brief with your website, priority offers, markets, known difficulties and internal resources. Describe observations rather than prescribing a rebuild. For example: “Our team can edit articles, but buyers repeatedly ask which service fits an existing website.” That gives the agency something to investigate.

Fictional responses to the same brief
Response What it establishes What to ask next
“You need a new theme.” A proposed solution, not a diagnosis. Which requirement cannot the current theme support? Show an example.
“The service page does not explain existing-site eligibility. We would verify the offer and inspect that template before recommending a change.” A visible information gap and a stated investigation. What can be corrected in the current page, and what access is needed?
“Publish 30 articles a month.” A production quantity. Which distinct buyer questions justify those articles, and who will review them?

The second response is easier to examine, but it is still not proof of execution capability. Ask the candidate to distinguish what it has observed, what it suspects and what it needs to verify. A useful recommendation can conclude that the current website should remain.

Separate advice, implementation and third-party support

“WordPress SEO” can include several different jobs. Make the handoffs explicit before comparing the fee. A provider that writes excellent recommendations may still need your developer to implement them; that can work if responsibility and cost are visible.

Responsibility questions for a WordPress proposal
Example task Advice Implementation Possible dependency
A service template hides important conditions on mobile. Identify the missing information and intended layout behavior. Change and check the actual template. Theme developer or licensed builder access.
A plugin change appears connected to a publishing problem. Document the observation and investigation needed. Test an approved fix safely and verify relevant functions. Plugin vendor, hosting or another developer.
Product pages need clearer application information. Define the reader questions and source requirements. Write, review and publish the approved material. Your product expert and publishing owner.

This is a comparison tool, not a list of tasks every agency provides. For each row relevant to your site, write a named owner against investigation, execution and approval. “Our technical team” is not enough if that team is outside the quoted engagement.

Inspect the content and the work behind the chart

Request a relevant brief, a finished piece and an explanation of the source input used. Look for business-specific conditions, accurate claims and a useful next step. An illustrative sample can show a writing approach, but it must not be presented as a delivered customer project.

For WordPress implementation claims, ask for appropriate evidence of the actual change: a description of the original constraint, approved work and checking performed. A traffic chart does not show whether a template problem was fixed. A successful launch also does not explain where later sales came from.

Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO recommends asking about experience, communication and methods, and cautions against ranking guarantees. Use those questions with the installation in front of you, rather than repeating a generic procurement questionnaire without testing the proposed work.

Decide who can change what

WordPress separates permissions through roles and capabilities. A content-editing assignment does not automatically require control over users, themes or plugins. The appropriate permission depends on the approved task and the actual installation.

Question Answer you need before access
What will be reviewed or changed? Named pages, settings or components, with a purpose.
Who authorizes live changes? The company’s approver and the proposed review method.
Which accounts and licenses are involved? Account holder, permission needed, renewal costs and transfer limitations.
What happens when work ends? Access removal, records provided and any ongoing dependencies, as actually agreed.

Do not send a password with the initial inquiry. Later access should use an appropriate invitation or delegated account. Ask how a business-critical form or integration will be checked after relevant changes; “the page still opens” is not always sufficient.

Make a decision—not just a scorecard

The following fictional shortlist uses decision labels rather than a numerical score that pretends to predict SEO results.

Candidate What is known Unresolved point Decision
A Explains the content gap and provides a relevant reviewed sample. Whether template implementation is included. Continue, subject to a named implementation owner and fee.
B Recommends a complete rebuild. No evidence that the present site prevents the required work. Request evidence before comparing a rebuild quote.
C Promises a first-place ranking and requires unrestricted access without naming changes. The proposed method and control are unclear. Do not approve that proposal on its present terms.

Apply the same standard to Stormy Increment. Use our listed service options as a starting point and confirm the WordPress configuration and implementation responsibilities directly; a directory listing is not a promise to support every installation. Your shortlist should leave you able to explain the problem, work, owners, total commitment and unknowns to a colleague. If it cannot, ask for the missing answer before buying more activity.
