Do You Need an SEO Agency or Can You Do It Yourself?
The short answer
Consider outside SEO help when there is useful work to do and your team lacks the time or expertise to do it. An agency is one option, not the only one. A clearly defined task may suit a freelancer, an internal colleague or a specialist.

Start with the problem, not the supplier
“We need more traffic” is not yet a workable brief. Identify the customer you want to reach, what that person needs to decide and which website page should help. If the offer itself is unclear, buying more content can repeat the same unclear message.
| Your situation | Sensible next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot describe how buyers search or compare | Talk to customers and review sales questions first | A supplier should not invent demand to fill a production plan |
| The offer is clear and one page lacks known facts | Give an internal owner a clearly defined improvement task | The immediate gap may be knowledge organization, not external expertise |
| The task is clear but nobody has capacity to complete it | Evaluate outside production or implementation support | There is a defined capacity gap |
| Work requires access nobody can approve | Resolve ownership and permissions before commissioning changes | Advice without a route to implementation can remain unused |
This is a delivery-readiness decision. Whether search is a worthwhile investment for your business is a separate question, addressed in the SEO investment guide.
List the work somebody must own
Doing SEO internally means owning a sequence of decisions and checks, not just writing articles. Use the following task inventory to identify the actual gap.
| Task | Input | Possible internal owner | Output and main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understand demand | Customer language and search observations | Marketing lead | A list of buyer tasks; avoid assuming every related phrase deserves a page |
| Improve an existing page | Known objections and approved facts | Page owner | A clearer answer; avoid unsupported claims |
| Check technical statements | Specifications, policies and evidence | Product or service expert | Approved factual copy; avoid publishing guessed limits |
| Publish and verify | Approved content and change permission | Website editor or developer | A tested page; avoid broken links, forms or content loss |
| Review usefulness | Work log, website data and sales feedback | Marketing and sales owners | A next decision; avoid treating every visit as a prospect |
One person may hold several roles. The important point is that the work, approval and risk are visible. If a task has no owner, paying for the preceding task will not make the missing handoff disappear.
What you can do yourself—and where to stop
Start with a page you understand. Write down the question it should answer. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to find the suitability conditions, key evidence and next step on a phone. Record what they cannot find. Compare those gaps with approved product information, then improve the answer without adding claims you cannot support.
After editing, check the published page—not just the editor. Follow its links, read the headings and test the intended inquiry path using an approved test procedure. Keep a copy of the original and a short record of what changed.
Stop and seek suitably evidenced help when a proposed change affects unfamiliar code, site-wide templates, many URLs, a migration or access you cannot safely manage. That is an escalation rule, not a claim that any particular agency is qualified. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a useful foundation for understanding the work before delegating it.
Match the gap to the type of support
| Illustrative company | The missing capability | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Experts can provide facts, but the team cannot decide which pages matter | Prioritization and direction | A clearly scoped advisory arrangement, with internal implementation assigned |
| A plan exists, but approved work is waiting for production | Writing, editing or publishing capacity | A freelancer or team with the necessary deliverable and review skills |
| Writers and developers are active, but nobody checks the handoff | Cross-functional review | An internal coordinator or external reviewer with relevant evidence |
These are examples, not available-product promises. An agency is not automatically the answer to all three. Compare advice with execution before comparing the provider’s organizational form.
Prepare a useful first brief
Collect the website address, priority product or service, target audience and markets, approved fact sources, recent change records, and the names of the people who can approve content and website changes. Add examples of good and unsuitable inquiries so the provider understands your commercial goal.
Share access only after the task and permission are clear. Do not send your primary password as part of an initial inquiry. An outside writer also needs someone who can settle factual questions. If nobody can approve a performance claim or specification, outsourcing does not make it safe to publish.
Decide whether you are ready for outside support
Complete this sentence before requesting a proposal: “We need this output. Our team supplies these facts and approvals. We lack this skill or capacity. The work is accepted when these checks pass.”
- DIY: a knowledgeable owner can improve one existing page and verify it safely.
- Hybrid: internal experts can approve facts while outside support handles a defined production gap.
- Defer: the company has not settled the offer, the factual reviewer or the implementation permission.
Choose a next action that can be completed, not a supplier label. When the task is ready, use the agency selection guide. If considering Stormy Increment, review the listed service options and confirm the work and responsibilities your task requires.
