How to Evaluate Link Building Services

Published 4 min read

The short answer

When comparing link-building services, ask how links are obtained, why the websites and pages are relevant, what the quoted quantity counts and how you can check delivery. An authority score or a large total cannot answer those questions.

On this page

Ask for one proposed reference from start to finish

Link-building services may involve researching opportunities, preparing material, communicating with publishers or other stated activities. Do not infer the actual method from “outreach,” “editorial” or “premium.” Ask who selects the source, who creates and approves content, who controls publication and what happens if a publisher declines or changes it.

Separate payment for agency work from any transaction with the publisher. Paying people to research and communicate is not the same arrangement as paying for a sponsored reference. Both need disclosure where relevant.

  • Which source categories are included, and which are excluded?
  • What is the reason for this destination and its audience?
  • Is there money, a reciprocal arrangement or another benefit connected to publication?
  • Who approves the source, wording, target and additional charges?
  • What does the provider actually control, and what remains with an outside publisher?

These questions help you evaluate a purchase; they do not describe Stormy Increment’s confirmed methods. The actual categories and relationships within our listed link service require confirmation.

Ask how links are obtained—not just how they are labeled

Google’s link-spam policy concerns links created primarily to manipulate rankings, including relevant buying, exchange and automated practices. “White hat” is not an independent compliance certificate.

For advertising and sponsorship links, Google recommends sponsored and also accepts nofollow; its guidance separately describes ugc for user-generated links. Record the actual relationship and appropriate attribute instead of demanding that a paid placement pass unqualified ranking credit.

Volume alone proves neither compliance nor a violation. The method, purpose, context and relationship matter. A provider unwilling to explain them has not supplied enough information for approval.

Inspect the page behind the score

Fictional quality review—not an approved source or promised placement
Question Illustrative observation Decision implication
Is the page relevant? An equipment-maintenance resource discusses an inspection checklist. The subject could fit; inspect the actual content and audience rather than the title alone.
Does the reference help? The proposed destination explains the checklist mentioned in the surrounding sentence. There is an understandable reader route, not merely a keyword anchor.
What is the relationship? A sponsorship fee is proposed. Disclose the arrangement, attributes and approval before acceptance.
What does the metric establish? A third-party domain score is included. It is one tool’s measurement, not evidence of editorial independence or Google approval.

Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric, not a substitute for this review. A relevant specialist resource may deserve investigation even when its score is lower; a higher-score unrelated page still needs a business reason.

Compare quotes on the same terms

Fictional proposals with incompatible headline quantities
Comparison field Proposal A: 30 records Proposal B: 8 domains
Unit Does a record mean proposed, submitted or confirmed live? How are domains grouped, and can existing sources be counted again?
Source mix Categories and acquisition relationships must be stated. The same requirement applies; more unique domains do not establish quality.
Fees Separate agency work, writing, publisher fees and tools. Identify the same included and additional costs.
Acceptance What page-level evidence makes a record acceptable? Which live references support each domain total?
Changes What happens to rejected, removed or altered links? Confirm any actual follow-up or replacement terms.

You cannot conclude that 30 offers more useful work than eight. Establish the counting unit first. Do not assume permanence, automatic free replacement, refunds or a particular source category unless the written proposal supports it.

Know what must be resolved before approval

Request representative authorized examples and a sample record that shows source URL, destination, anchor, relationship, attributes, date, status and acceptance notes. Clearly labeled illustrations can explain reporting, but they cannot prove delivery experience.

  • Method not disclosed: do not approve until the actual process and relationship are explained.
  • Third-party fees unclear: resolve who pays and who authorizes publication.
  • Quantity unverifiable: require page-level evidence and consistent counting rules.
  • Outcome guaranteed: distinguish completed work from rankings, inquiries and revenue the provider cannot assure.

A reviewable report should support a decision to continue, adjust or pause. This guide is not a researched ranking of the “best” agencies. Choose when you understand the proposed work and its unresolved risks well enough to explain them to a colleague.
