Backlinks vs Referring Domains: Count the Difference

Published 4 min read

The short answer

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. A referring domain is the domain that link comes from. One domain can send many links, so 100 backlinks does not necessarily mean 100 different websites.

On this page

Keep four units separate

  • Individual links: references to the destination, under the stated counting rules.
  • Source or linking pages: URLs containing one or more references.
  • Referring domains: distinct domains represented by those source pages, with a stated grouping rule.
  • Delivery records: rows logging proposed, submitted, observed, changed or checked work.

An entry in a work log does not prove a link is live. A submitted request may be recorded even if it has not been accepted or published. Before comparing packages, ask which unit the promise actually uses and whether failed attempts, duplicates and repeated checks are excluded from the delivered total.

Count a small example yourself

Fictional references, not client placements
Source page Domain Individual links to the company
publisher.example/implementation-guide publisher.example 2
publisher.example/resources publisher.example 1
association.example/member-guide association.example 1

There are four individual links, three source pages and two domains. Importing the first row twice does not create another source page or domain. A tool that combines multiple links on one page to the same destination may display a different backlink count; explain that rule instead of silently changing the unit.

Now imagine the first publisher repeats a reference across many pages. The link or page count may rise while the number of domains stays at two. Repeated references are not automatically worthless, but they do not show a wider set of sources.

Check what each dashboard counts

Record the tool, export date, destination scope and filters. Links to one product URL are not the same scope as links to the entire company website. A historical list is also different from a current page-level check.

Search Console’s Links report is sampled, groups linking sites and can contain previously found links that no longer exist. It is not a complete live delivery receipt.

Discrepancy What to investigate
One tool shows many more links. Repeated pages, historical records, destination scope and deduplication rules.
A reported domain is absent from another export. Different discovery, sampling, grouping and dates; inspect actual source URLs.
A link appears in a historical report but not on the page. Current presence and changes, not an assumption that it is still live.

Reconcile a few concrete URLs first. The largest number is not automatically the correct answer to your purchasing question.

Link totals do not tell you relevance or independence

Ask why the source refers to the page, who uses it and whether the destination helps that audience. Ten references from one specialist publisher and ten from unrelated domains are different situations; neither can be judged only by its domain count.

Ahrefs defines Domain Rating as its proprietary backlink-profile metric. Name it as a tool indicator, not a Google quality certificate. A larger score does not remove the need to inspect the actual page, relationship and context.

Likewise, different domains are not necessarily independent endorsements. Ask about disclosed ownership or relationships where relevant, rather than treating every new hostname as a separate vote of confidence.

Read quantity claims without changing their meaning

Stormy’s annual Google SEO Growth Plan includes up to 3,000 links per year. That is not 3,000 referring domains, 3,000 editorial articles or a guaranteed ranking gain. A ceiling does not establish that every project should use the maximum.

The actual source categories, acquisition relationships, duplication rules, fees and acceptance criteria need confirmation. The service scope must not be inferred from a counting example.

Use the procurement guide before comparing offers. In the report, keep newly delivered work, newly discovered old links and existing links checked again in separate categories. A clear count answers a defined question; it is not, on its own, evidence of more customers.
