How Much Does SEO Cost? Models, Benchmarks and Your Full Budget

There is no single price for SEO worldwide.

The short answer

There is no single price for SEO worldwide. Public monthly offers starting at US$1,000, US$2,000 and US$2,900 cover different work. Use those examples as context, then compare the scope, commitment and resources your team needs. They are not an industry average.

What SEO costs—and what the numbers mean

The supplier prices below were checked on 19 October 2026. Dollar figures refer to the suppliers’ US-facing price displays. They are advertised offers, not negotiated quotes for your website, independently verified quality ratings or Stormy Increment prices. Confirm taxes, checkout conditions, scope and commitment with the supplier.

Supplier and original source Public price and unit Scope described and limitation
THE HOTH managed SEO Starter US$1,000/month; higher displayed budgets US$2,500, US$5,000 and US$10,000/month A recurring managed budget with an SEO manager. This is not a promise that every work type is included at every budget; obtain the actual allocation and terms.
OuterBox packages Essentials US$2,000/month; Pro US$3,000/month; Enterprise from US$7,000/month Different market and site-complexity scopes. The page describes Essentials for a limited local-market foundation and month-to-month billing; it is not interchangeable with an international program.
WebFX SEO services Starting at US$2,900/month Custom scope; the service FAQ states an initial six-month commitment. A starting price does not describe your complete cost.
WebFX consulting Starting at US$2,900/month A separately described consulting offer. This is another offer from the same supplier, not another independent market observation.

The consulting and monthly service pages also show phased pricing. Their lowest table tier lists US$8,600 for the initial two-month stage, followed by US$2,900 per month for the subsequent four months of a six-month commitment. Do not calculate the whole engagement as six payments of US$2,900. Ask which displayed offer, scope and startup terms apply to the proposal. These observations do not establish a usual rate for all agencies, consultants, freelancers, B2B companies or small businesses.

Historical surveys are a different evidence type. Ahrefs’ pricing survey, updated in August 2024, describes 439 providers with differing regions and business models. It is not a 2026 price list. Its calculation assumptions and inconsistent summary/detail figures are reasons not to republish a headline average as today’s global buying benchmark.

If a proposal mentions “paid SEO” or “SEO advertising,” ask what it means. If you mean hiring people to improve organic search, compare service fees. If you mean advertising, separate media spend and management. The table above is not a Google Ads media-cost table. Google’s organic results and paid services are different purchases.

Monthly, annual, project and hourly models

Model What is being bought What to compare
Monthly Recurring defined work or capacity Tasks, review, minimum term, extra costs and remaining client work
Annual A program over a year Full annual commitment, production limits, payment schedule and change conditions
Project A clearly defined diagnosis, output or implementation task Acceptance, handoff, dependencies and what happens afterward
Hourly Specified time or expertise What the hours produce, time approval, research/preparation and implementation costs

Do not compare an hourly advisory fee with a fully implemented page. Do not assume a monthly invoice means a one-month commitment. An annual figure divided by twelve is a budget equivalent, not a monthly payment option. A retainer’s “typical fee” is meaningful only after identifying its scope and the population being described.

Why one quote costs more than another

Look for a work explanation. Multiple templates, languages, product lines, approval requirements and platform constraints can increase the effort. Technical or comparative claims may require interviews and expert review. Advice-only work leaves different costs inside the company from work that includes implementation.

Company size and B2B status are not price formulas. A small specialist company can have a difficult evidence problem; a larger company may need only one clearly defined review. More pages do not automatically mean more useful production. Existing approved material can reduce research even when the subject is complex.

Build the full budget

This fictional US-dollar example covers one initial period. It excludes taxes and currency changes and is not a Stormy Increment quote.

Cost Illustrative amount Timing
Specified provider work US$1,500 For the example period
Developer implementation US$600 One-time initial task
Internal factual review US$200 For the example period
Coordination and acceptance US$150 For the example period
Allocated tool cost US$50 For the example period
Total US$2,500 1,500 + 600 + 200 + 150 + 50

If the initial development task does not repeat, later spending may differ. Do not quietly repeat or remove one-time costs to improve an ROI calculation. Separate production, implementation and measurement from revenue and profit; the budget above predicts neither.

What a smaller company should prioritize

Start with an implementable commercial gap. A small service company with known facts but a vague eligibility page may benefit from improving that page before commissioning many awareness articles. If approved drafts are waiting for publication, resolve the implementation gap before buying more drafts.

A low price is useful only if the company can use and verify the output. Do not assume that a cheap quantity offer includes fact checking, safe methods or your required platform work. Use the priority matrix to decide what not to buy yet.

Stormy Increment’s annual plan: what the stated price covers

Stormy Increment’s stated comprehensive annual price is US$8,800 per year. It combines a custom WordPress marketing website, keyword strategy, up to 300 English articles per year, AI/GEO work, up to 3,000 links per year and 12 monthly reports. The quantities are ceilings, not required production or a promise of 3,000 distinct referring domains.

Existing websites are assessed for retaining, adapting or rebuilding; an existing site does not automatically receive a rebuild or discount. The annual price does not establish a monthly retainer, an hourly consulting price, cancellation rights or inclusion of every third-party expense. Review the actual purchase documents for payment, renewal, revisions, maintenance, ownership and additional costs.

Turn a price into a comparable quote

Create three columns—included, separately paid and unknown—for research, writing, factual review, upload, development, software, links, reporting and handover. Put the implementer and acceptance check beside each line.

Ask what changes the price, which client inputs it assumes and which costs continue after the first stage. Then normalize the proposals and review the contract questions. The best comparison is not a global average; it is the full cost of completing the same useful job.
