Multi-Location and Franchise SEO: Define the Scope
The short answer
Multi-location SEO takes more than copying a page for every city. Start with your real locations, the information customers need locally and clear responsibilities for head office, branches and providers. Keep the brand consistent without making every page identical.
On this page
A target market is not a business location
List the places the business actually operates and how customers are served. A branch, a service area and a target market are not the same thing. Google’s representation rules apply to the actual arrangement, not the number of places in a marketing plan.
Check eligibility and accurate representation for each proposed profile. Do not invent offices or use addresses that do not meet the applicable conditions. A business serving customers remotely can still explain its reach honestly on its website without pretending to operate a local branch.
Keep shared facts consistent and local facts useful
The example below is a fictional two-branch business. No real addresses, branch operations or customer results are being represented.
| Information | Demonstration North branch | Demonstration South branch | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business identity and core offer. | Uses approved company identity. | Uses the same approved identity. | Headquarters maintains the common source. |
| Visit information. | Has a customer reception area; actual hours, address and visit conditions required. | Provides a different appointment arrangement; explain the actual access conditions. | Local manager verifies; publisher checks display. |
| Available service. | Explains its real supported service options. | Explains any genuine difference rather than inheriting a false inclusion. | Service owner approves each variation. |
| Customer task. | Prepare for a visit to the branch. | Confirm suitability and arrange the appropriate appointment. | Pages offer relevant next steps. |
Headquarters can explain the shared business and route people to a genuine branch. A branch page should answer local practical questions, not repeat a generic sales page with a city name swapped. Google’s doorway policy is relevant to substantially similar pages built to funnel searches rather than help people.
Assign both factual and account responsibility
| Work | Headquarters | Branch/franchisee | External provider, if appointed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common business facts. | Approves brand and core service statements. | Flags genuine local exceptions. | Uses approved sources, not assumptions. |
| Location facts. | Maintains the process and record. | Verifies actual hours, contact, service and access. | Publishes only authorized changes. |
| Profile access. | Names authorized company ownership. | Receives appropriate role where needed. | Receives approved delegated access. |
| Reviews/customer issues. | Defines escalation and privacy boundaries. | Resolves the actual service issue and approves relevant facts. | May prepare responses only within its agreed remit. |
| Website updates. | Approves templates and shared content. | Checks local accuracy. | Implements the named work and records it. |
Google provides separate owner and manager roles. Account access and commercial responsibility should both be recorded. Unknown ownership is a task to resolve, not a blank cell to ignore or a reason to share one password across organizations.
A group total can hide a branch problem
| Branch | 1–30 September 2025 | 1–30 September 2026 | Absolute change |
|---|---|---|---|
| North. | 100. | 140. | +40. |
| South. | 100. | 80. | −20. |
| Group. | 200. | 220. | +20. |
The group is up 10%, while South is down 20%. Those calculations describe the example counts; they do not show that SEO caused either change. Equal-length periods in the same calendar month improve comparability but do not remove other changes.
Define the action and data source, keep branch coverage consistent and record opening hours, service, tracking or other material changes. Review qualified inquiries separately where authorized records exist. Do not expose customer details in a group report or invent map-grid results that were never measured.
Specify the organization you need a provider to support
A useful request identifies real locations, business models, websites/profiles involved, factual owners, platforms, data cleanup, ongoing content and local differences. Ask who implements, who approves, what tools cost, how reporting is separated and what happens when a branch or engagement changes.
Do not assume a central software fee buys all manual work or that a national website package includes every branch profile. The cost guide keeps those units separate, while the provider checklist covers evidence and access.
This is not a local/franchise management offer from Stormy Increment. Its listed website and marketing services do not establish multi-location implementation capability. Use this scope to identify the support you need, then verify the actual provider fit.
