How to Evaluate an SEO Provider’s Industry Experience

An industry label is a starting point, not proof of expertise.

The short answer

An industry label is a starting point, not proof of expertise. Check whether the provider understands your business, has suitable reviewers and can carry out the work. Relevant subject expertise and a clear process matter more than a sector name on a sales page.

On this page

Focus on the job: what needs research, which facts need checking, who approves them and what must be published.

Define the experience you actually need

A local installer and an equipment manufacturer may use similar product words while serving completely different buying tasks. A dental practice needs appropriate professional review, not merely a writer who recognises dental keywords. An ecommerce catalogue and a complex engineering-service site may need different platforms, data and approval routes.

Capability What it should demonstrate What does not establish it
Research Understanding the relevant buyer and task A list of sector keywords alone
Subject review An appropriate person can verify important claims The agency’s marketing title
Implementation Changes can be delivered on the relevant platform A strategy presentation
Comparable work Actual role, constraints and outputs are relevant A customer logo without scope or permission

Do not require identical past clients as the only possible evidence, but do not treat unrelated work as equivalent. Explain which similarities matter for your project.

Ask for evidence you can inspect

Evidence request Fictional finding Status and consequence
An authorized relevant page or deliverable sample Sample available, with role and approval trail Work can be inspected; the commercial outcome is still separate
Source and period behind a performance claim Only a chart image, no market or date filters Partly supported; request the missing context
Subject-review process Provider expects the client to verify facts, but no reviewer is named Open dependency; not proof of professional review
Relevant implementation example Sample uses another platform with a different release process Possibly informative but not enough to establish compatibility

Ask for authorized, appropriately redacted material rather than another customer’s confidential files. Google’s guide to hiring SEO support is a useful primary reference for investigating methods and references. It does not certify a particular provider.

Agree who reviews and approves the content

Information Appropriate approval to establish Publication risk
Product or service facts Authorised product/service owner A writer guesses capability or availability
Commercial promises Business or commercial owner Unapproved price, deadline or warranty
Legal, medical or financial statements Suitably qualified reviewer under the relevant jurisdiction and institutional standards Marketing prose is mistaken for professional advice or a compliant claim
Customer information and images Permitted use and the responsible data/rights owner Confidentiality or permission is assumed

This is a responsibility framework, not legal, medical or financial advice. Identify the actual current rules and reviewer for the project. An SEO qualification does not confer a professional license, and an unanswered factual question should not be filled with plausible prose.

Test an actual industry task

For a fictional equipment supplier, the test might be: “Help a buyer establish whether to ask about our standard range or request an assessment.” Supply only approved facts and permitted materials. Ask the provider to explain the task, sources, proposed structure, uncertainties, reviewers and completion checks.

  • Does the draft explain the choice, or merely repeat technical-sounding words?
  • Does it distinguish confirmed scope from requirements needing review?
  • Can the reviewer trace important claims to approved sources?
  • Is the next step appropriate without unnecessary confidential information?
  • Would a different page or a substantial section be more useful than another near-duplicate URL?

Agree sample fees, confidentiality and usage rights first. A test can expose weak work without pretending to validate future rankings. It can also show that the client’s source material—not the writer’s sentence structure—is the immediate bottleneck.

Compare the work behind an industry quote

Comparison field Proposal question
Business model and market Does the work concern local service, remote sales, a catalogue or complex procurement?
Page tasks and scale Which concrete buying questions and templates are included?
Subject and language review Who supplies it, approves it and pays for it?
Implementation Is the provider advising, publishing or developing specified changes?
Maintenance and evidence Who updates changing facts and records results?
Cost status What is included, extra or unknown—including internal effort?

There is no reliable sector price hidden in the industry name. Compare actual quoted scopes instead of inventing an average. A specialist-review requirement may change the cost; a sector adjective alone does not establish that more work is necessary.

Choose, narrow the scope or wait

Proceed when the relevant work and reviewers are evidenced, responsibilities are clear and the unresolved risks are acceptable to the business owner. Narrow the project when a useful low-risk task can be handled but broader claims cannot. Wait when an important professional assertion, platform requirement or service capability remains unverified.

For example, a provider might help organize an approved product page while a qualified technical reviewer controls the facts. That does not make it a proven engineering-sector specialist. A legal practice might need professional advertising review before even a well-written marketing page can be approved.

Use the case-evidence checklist and general selection guide alongside this industry check. A provider’s sector page is not, by itself, evidence of services for every industry. For a location-based business, also check the local-service responsibilities.
