Refresh, Rewrite or Consolidate Website Content?

Published 4 min read

The short answer

Refresh a page when its main answer still works but specific facts or sections need updating. Rewrite it when the audience, purpose or main answer is wrong. Keep useful, accurate content regardless of its age; changing the date is not an improvement by itself.

On this page

Choose the action from the actual gap

Action When it fits What would not justify it alone
Keep The page answers a current question accurately and supports a useful next step. It has always been there; important facts still need checking.
Refresh The main answer works, but a condition, example or source needs correction. A wish to show a newer date without meaningful changes.
Rewrite The page addresses the wrong reader, question or offer. Low traffic without evidence of a content mismatch.
Consolidate Several pages give the same answer without a useful distinction. Similar keywords when the buying tasks are actually different.
Review for retirement The information no longer serves a legitimate task or cannot be supported. Age or a quiet analytics chart without checking customer use and dependencies.

A service page missing one inclusion is a different assignment from a guide written for the wrong audience. An accurate resource used during occasional customer conversations may deserve to remain even if it has little search traffic.

Use each source for the question it can answer

Start by describing the page’s purpose in one sentence. Then compare that job with the actual text and available evidence.

  • Search records can show which queries and pages appear in the available sample. They do not independently prove why a reader did not inquire.
  • Sales questions can reveal missing conditions or confusing terminology. Record the question rather than converting an isolated comment into a universal conclusion.
  • Approved business material establishes current product facts, availability and service boundaries. It should resolve conflicting claims across pages.
  • The page and its layout show whether the intended answer is present and understandable. A useful paragraph hidden in an unsuitable component may require implementation as well as writing.

When information is missing, record the uncertainty. Do not substitute a more confident sentence for a fact the company cannot verify.

Be specific about what the page needs

The following fictional service-page review is a writing specification, not a customer project or a claim about Stormy’s terms.

Existing material Decision Required change Reason and acceptance
A clear explanation of the service’s purpose. Keep. Retain the accurate explanation. It already answers what is supplied; unnecessary rewriting risks losing useful detail.
“All maintenance is included.” Remove pending verification. Use the approved maintenance boundary, not an inferred entitlement. The service owner must approve the actual commitment before publication.
No explanation for an existing website. Add a section. Explain the retain/adapt/rebuild considerations and what needs assessment. The reader can identify the next input without being promised a rebuild or discount.
Two paragraphs repeating that the service is comprehensive. Replace. State concrete output and exclusions using approved facts. The buyer learns something the adjective did not establish.
A related guide already answers the detailed comparison. Link in context. Keep the essential offer explanation on this page, with a descriptive route to the deeper guide. The link extends the answer; it does not replace it.

This is a refresh if the offer and structure remain sound. If the company now sells something fundamentally different, commission a new brief before trying to patch every paragraph.

Separate content approval from moving or removing pages

A writer can recommend consolidation without being authorized to delete a URL. Before moving material, list links, downloads, customer references and other dependencies. Choose an appropriate destination for useful content and assign the technical work separately.

Google’s site-move guidance explains URL mapping and transition work. A spreadsheet decision is not an implementation plan. Have the responsible team approve the change and check the resulting paths.

For ordinary revisions, compare the final page with the approved change list: what was retained, what changed, which claims were checked and what remains unresolved. Only then observe relevant search or inquiry evidence. A later change in traffic does not prove the rewrite caused it.

Commission the right amount of writing

Ask the quote to distinguish a factual correction, revised sections, a complete rewrite, consolidation and publishing work. Two pages of the same length may need very different research and review.

A small correction can use a short approved change list. A substantial rewrite needs a clear reader, answer and source pack. Consolidation also needs a decision about which material belongs together and who handles the old address. Confirm how each task is counted and priced instead of assuming it consumes the same allowance.

Stormy Increment’s English writing service is a place to discuss actual assignments, not an automatic entitlement to every kind of update. Use the review checklist at handoff. The result of a good review may be a stronger existing page, not another URL.
