SEO for a New Website: Before and After Launch
The short answer
Plan SEO before launching a new website, but do not wait for a large blog to explain your business. Start with the searches buyers make, accurate pages that answer them and a site people can use. Then record your starting point and improve based on what you learn.

Decide what search needs to do for the business
SEO is a sensible investment when relevant customers search for your offer or for questions connected to choosing it, and you can provide a credible answer. It is less useful to commission a broad content program while the company is still deciding what it sells, where it can deliver or who will handle inquiries.
Ask three questions first: what could a suitable customer search for; what information would help that person evaluate us; and can our team supply and approve that information? A positive answer supports planning. Missing facts call for business work first, not hundreds of generated articles.
A new website also needs a realistic resource decision. If the internal team can maintain the pages but not produce specialist material, buying writing may fit. If it cannot approve product claims or respond to prospects, a larger publishing allowance will not remove that constraint.
Build the smallest useful page system
These two fictional page maps show why a service business and a product seller should not launch identical libraries.
| Page role | Service company | Product company |
|---|---|---|
| Main offer | A service page explaining fit, output, exclusions and client responsibilities. | A product or product-family page explaining specifications, suitability and buying requirements. |
| Comparison | A guide to choosing between two approaches or engagement types. | A selection guide using the actual conditions that distinguish models. |
| Evidence | An authorized work example, demonstration or clearly defined result. | Approved specifications, test documentation or a clearly labeled demonstration. |
| Company and contact | Who provides the service and what to send for an assessment. | Who supplies the product, where it is available and what an inquiry requires. |
For either map, connect the guide to the offer where that connection helps. A page about “choosing a provider” and another about “selecting a company” may be one assignment if they answer the same question. Two genuinely different services should not be compressed into an unclear paragraph simply to keep the site small.
Do the basic work before asking for rankings
The checklist below turns “make the site SEO-friendly” into tasks someone can complete. Google’s SEO Starter Guide provides the underlying guidance; these checks are not a promise of inclusion or a particular position.
| Task | Practical check | Owner to name |
|---|---|---|
| Title and main heading | Describe the actual page clearly. Different offers should not all use the same vague title. | Writer and business approver. |
| Page answer | Read the opening without the design. Can a newcomer tell what the page explains and when it applies? | Editor and product/service expert. |
| Links and discovery | Follow links from the home or service overview to priority pages. Use descriptive links to relevant next answers. | Website publisher. |
| Technical availability | Have the implementation owner verify public access, intended indexing settings and relevant launch restrictions. | Developer or website administrator. |
| Images and reading | Keep important information available as text; describe meaningful images appropriately and inspect a small screen. | Editor and designer. |
| Inquiry path | Submit an authorized test, verify notification delivery and confirm who follows up. | Website owner and sales/contact owner. |
| Measurement | Confirm the intended Search Console property and any agreed website actions. Record what cannot yet be measured. | Measurement owner. |
Check representative pages, not just the homepage. A long specification, a comparison table and a service limitation may reveal layout problems that short placeholders hide. The website acceptance checklist provides more detail for that review.
Plan an honest first performance review
Record the launch date, priority pages, intended audience and important changes. Early data may be too small to establish a pattern. In that situation, state the limitation and use available customer questions to improve the explanation.
| Observation | Action | Owner | Completion evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales is asked whether an existing installation is eligible. | Have the business expert approve a suitability section on the service page. | Service owner and writer. | Approved conditions visible on the page. |
| Too few search records to judge topic demand. | Keep the baseline and investigate later; do not claim growth from a tiny percentage change. | Measurement owner. | A dated note explaining data coverage. |
| An inquiry test does not reach its recipient. | Investigate delivery before promoting the contact path. | Website/contact owner. | A successful authorized retest. |
There is no fixed number of days after which a new site must rank. Completed work, observed visibility and suitable inquiries are different things. Use the measurement guide to keep them separate.
Get help with the work your team cannot cover
- You have reliable content and someone who can publish: your team may be able to handle the initial page work, with specialist help for a defined constraint.
- You need a usable company website: compare the starter and custom build options. A build does not automatically buy continuing SEO.
- You need coordinated website and ongoing search work: review the actual annual scope, including its limits and client inputs.
- You need platform-specific remediation: first establish whether a provider can implement it on your installation. A general writing or SEO label is not sufficient.
The next useful step is a page map and responsibility list—not a target article count. Our design-and-SEO handoff guide helps you connect those decisions before work begins.
