Ecommerce SEO Planning: Products, Categories and Ownership
The short answer
Plan ecommerce SEO around how shoppers find, compare and buy the right products. Product pages, categories, filters and guides each have a different role. Adding more text to every item is not a strategy by itself.

Distinguish a product catalog from an online store
An inquiry-led catalog helps a buyer compare specifications and prepare a request. A transactional store must also support the actual buying path, including the relevant availability, price, options and purchase conditions. The two journeys may overlap, but they need different implementation work.
Start with what the company actually sells, where it can supply and which action the website can support. Do not offer immediate checkout if the business must first check whether the product suits the application. Conversely, do not force a straightforward store purchase through an unnecessarily vague inquiry.
This guide explains planning. It is not a statement that Stormy provides Shopify, WooCommerce or every other store-development service.
Give products, categories and advice distinct roles
| Role | A small range of three desk lamps | A multi-category equipment store |
|---|---|---|
| Main route | Home → range comparison → individual lamp. | Home → equipment category → relevant subcategory/product. |
| Product page | Verified dimensions, controls, included parts, availability and purchase conditions for that lamp. | The selected model’s verified specifications, options and buying requirements. |
| Category page | A clear overview may be enough; do not manufacture many empty groupings. | Helps buyers understand the category and reach suitable products. |
| Filter | May be unnecessary if three choices are already understandable. | Useful when real attributes help narrow a meaningful selection; technical behavior needs checking. |
| Supporting guide | A comparison of the three models’ approved differences. | A requirements or selection guide for an important equipment decision. |
Google’s structure guidance describes how links between categories and products help explain a store. Do not assume URL wording alone communicates all relationships. For a buyer, the route must make sense too.
Improve supplier copy with verified buying information
Suppose a fictional supplier description says only “a versatile, high-quality lamp for every desk.” Repeating or paraphrasing that sentence does not answer how a customer should choose.
A useful assignment asks the product owner for approved dimensions, power requirements, control options, included components and situations where the model is unsuitable. It also asks the commercial owner for actual market availability, price/stock rules and purchase or inquiry requirements. Do not invent those values or claim first-hand testing.
| Information | Source and owner | Maintenance question |
|---|---|---|
| Specification and suitability. | Approved product documentation; product expert. | Who flags a model or specification change? |
| Price and availability. | Actual commercial/inventory source. | What updates automatically and what needs review? |
| Images and demonstrations. | Authorized supplied or commissioned material. | Where can the material legally be reused? |
| Market and buying conditions. | Company’s approved sales information. | Who checks that the page reflects current supply boundaries? |
Unique usefulness comes from answering the real question, not forcing a different adjective into every product description.
Connect content decisions to platform implementation
| Task | Decision owner | Implementation/review owner |
|---|---|---|
| Define category membership. | Product/merchandising. | Platform publisher verifies the intended listings. |
| Choose useful filters. | Product and customer-experience owners. | Platform developer checks behavior and technical consequences. |
| Write explanations. | Content owner with approved product facts. | Expert checks truth; editor checks clarity; authorized publisher releases. |
| Handle stock changes. | Inventory/commercial owner. | Platform owner verifies the intended customer action and page state. |
| Review search evidence. | SEO/measurement owner. | Product and implementation teams assess proposed actions. |
Platform details matter. Shopify documents built-in SEO functions and editable content controls. WooCommerce documents different roles for categories, tags and attributes. Neither document certifies a particular installation or provider. Verify themes, apps/extensions, permissions and dependencies before assigning implementation.
Choose the first step from the actual constraint
- Important product facts are absent but the path works: obtain approved facts and improve the relevant product/category explanation first.
- Filters or templates prevent the intended product route: document representative examples and investigate the platform with a suitable implementation owner.
- Sales have changed but the cause is unknown: inspect demand, offer, measurement and customer feedback before prescribing a content campaign or migration.
Prepare the platform, representative products/categories, markets, known limitations, data available and decision-makers. If an assessment is needed, use the audit scope checklist. A writing brief can help once the information task is clear.
Stormy has no confirmed standalone ecommerce SEO product presented here. Its existing services must be assessed against the actual requirements; a planning article is not evidence of specialist store support.
